Can You Pass This Medical Terminology Test?

Sixty four terms that turn up on charts, discharge letters and pharmacy labels every single day. Nurses and paramedics will breeze through the first half. Everyone else will discover how much of this language they have absorbed from hospital dramas without ever learning what it actually means. Hit the button below and find out where you stand.

A Language Built From Two Dead Ones

Medical vocabulary is assembled almost entirely from Greek and Latin parts. That sounds like an obstacle, but it is the opposite. Once you know a handful of roots, thousands of terms become readable on sight. Take cardio for heart, itis for inflammation, ology for the study of. Combine them and you can decode words you have never seen before. The system was designed to be predictable, and it still is.

The Prefixes That Do Most Of The Work

A small number of prefixes carry an enormous share of the meaning. Hyper means above, hypo means below, brady means slow, tachy means fast, and a or an at the start means without. Those five alone unlock a large slice of this quiz. Hypertension and hypotension are opposites. So are bradycardia and tachycardia. If you can spot the prefix, you are most of the way to the answer.

Why Precision Matters So Much

In everyday speech, near enough is usually fine. In a hospital it is not. Dysphagia means trouble swallowing while dysphasia means trouble with speech, and the two are one letter apart. That is why the vocabulary resists being simplified. Each term marks a specific distinction, and the distinctions carry consequences for treatment.

You Already Know More Than You Think

Words such as chronic, acute, benign and biopsy have long since crossed into ordinary conversation. Others, like iatrogenic and idiopathic, remain firmly inside the profession. Most people score better on the everyday terms and stumble on the ones describing causes and origins. Watch for that pattern in your own answers as you go.

How To Play

Sixty four terms, four possible meanings each. Choose your answer and the explanation appears immediately, usually breaking the word into its parts so the meaning sticks. Your score updates live at the top of the screen and every question carries a hint. This quiz explains vocabulary only. It is not medical advice, and nothing here should be used to assess a real symptom. Hit the button below when you are ready to begin.
