Can You Name These Vintage Household Items?

Forty seven objects that once sat in ordinary homes and have quietly disappeared from them. Some you will name the instant the picture loads. Others will nag at you, familiar from a grandparent's kitchen or a garage shelf, without the word arriving. Hit the button below and see how much of the old house you still recognise.

Things That Needed A Person

The strongest thread running through these objects is effort. A butter churn, a mangle, a carpet beater and a coffee percolator all required someone to turn, crank, wring or watch them. Electricity did not simply make housework faster. It removed the physical labour that had defined domestic life for centuries, and with it a whole category of tools vanished from the cupboard.

One Object, One Job

Older households were full of single purpose items. A warming pan warmed a bed and did nothing else. A tin opener opened tins. A pencil sharpener sharpened pencils. Modern homes replaced dozens of these with a handful of devices that do many jobs adequately. Something was gained in space and something was lost in the satisfying obviousness of a tool that announced its purpose by its shape.

The Ones That Refused To Die

Not everything here is extinct. The moka pot, the abacus, the fountain pen and the pinball machine all survive, kept alive by people who prefer them to whatever replaced them. Others hang on in changed form. The jukebox became the playlist. The Rolodex became the contacts app. The object disappeared while the need remained exactly where it was.

Why Recognition Beats Recall

Many of these objects were background furniture in childhood, seen constantly and rarely named aloud. That produces a strange gap where the shape is deeply familiar but the word is not. If a picture feels obvious and the answer still refuses to surface, that is the gap talking. The options are there to jog it loose.

How To Play

One photograph, four options, forty seven times. Choose your answer and a short note about the object appears immediately. Your score updates live at the top of the screen and every question carries a hint describing what the thing actually did. All photographs are freely licensed and credited to their photographers. Hit the button below when you are ready to begin.
