Before The Highwaymen turned “Highwayman” into an outlaw country anthem, Glen Campbell gave the song a sweeping, cinematic life of its own.

THIS SONG HAD A LONG ROAD BEFORE WILLIE NELSON EVER SANG IT.

Jimmy Webb wrote and first recorded “Highwayman” in 1977. The song follows one soul through four lives: a highwayman, a sailor, a dam builder, and finally a starship captain.

Then Glen Campbell recorded it in 1978 and later performed it with orchestras, giving the song the drama of an American horror story.

Glen Campbell Live in Concert-“Highwayman” With The Boston Pops

But here’s what made Glen’s version special…

With the Boston Pops behind him, “Highwayman” became bigger than a country song.

It sounded like a legend being told around a fire, with strings, horns, and Glen’s voice turning every verse into a different lifetime.

And that’s not all…

The song later found its most famous home with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. Their 1985 version hit No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart and even gave the supergroup its name.

Here’s Jimmy Webb’s own version of the song that started it all…

Here’s the truth…

“Highwayman” survived because every great artist heard something different in it.

Jimmy Webb heard reincarnation of a lost era.

Glen Campbell pictured what it would sound like with a full orchestra.

Willie Nelson and The Highwaymen heard four outlaws telling one eternal story.

Which version of “Highwayman” do you prefer: Glen Campbell’s orchestral take or The Highwaymen’s outlaw classic?

“If That Ain’t Country” is not a polished radio love song.

It is rough.

Defiant.

And impossible to mistake for anything but outlaw country music.

DAVID ALLAN COE TURNED HARD LIVING INTO A COUNTRY SLOGAN.

Released on his 1977 album Rides Again, the track is mostly spoken-word storytelling over sparse country backing.

It paints a blunt picture of Southern poverty, family hardship, backwoods pride, and a life lived far from polite Nashville rules.

David Allan Coe- “If That Ain’t Country”

But here’s why fans still remember it…

That repeated line, “If that ain’t country, I’ll kiss your ass,” became more than a lyric.

It became a dare.

A way of saying country music did not have to be clean, soft, or approved by executives to be real.

And that’s not all…

The song also remains controversial because some of its language has aged badly, and even satire outlets have pointed out how complicated it is for modern listeners to revisit. Farce the Music labeled its article about the song as satire, but the debate around the track’s offensive language is very real.

Here’s the truth…

Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson helped make outlaw country feel larger than life through The Highwaymen. Their music carried the same rebellious spirit, even when they approached it with more grace and wisdom.

So when Willie fans hear a song like “If That Ain’t Country,” they understand the attitude behind it.

Raw life.

No polish.

No apology.

So tell us… Is “If That Ain’t Country” still an outlaw classic, or is it too rough for today?

Watch Willie Nelson and the outlaw spirit live here.

Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson were already stars when they joined forces in 1985, but together they became something country music had never really seen before.

THIS WAS NOT JUST A BAND. IT WAS A COUNTRY SUPERGROUP.

Four voices.

Four egos.

Four outlaw legends.

And somehow, they made it work.

The Untold Truth of the Highwaymen

But here’s what made them special…

They did not sound polished or manufactured.

They sounded lived-in.

Cash’s voice was pure darkness.
Willie added the much-needed soul.
Waylon was the gritty outlaw that gave the band its legitimacy.
Kris was the academic and intellectual in the book, he was the one who wrote poetry.

Together, they helped turn outlaw country into a blueprint for every country tough guy who came after them.

And that’s not all…

Their song “Highwayman” became a No. 1 country hit, and the group went on to release three albums between 1985 and 1995. PBS later called them country music’s “Mount Rushmore,” and honestly, it is hard to argue with that.

Here’s another look at the group that fans still talk about today…

Here’s the truth…

The Highwaymen were not where their careers started.

They were where their legends collided.

Cash, Waylon, Willie, and Kris each had their own lane, but together they became the face of a rougher, freer, more rebellious country sound.

Now Waylon, Cash, and Kris are gone, and Willie is the last Highwayman still standing.

Which member of The Highwaymen was your favorite?

Who else misses The Highwaymen?

Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson were already legends before they joined forces in the 1980s.

COUNTRY MUSIC MAY NEVER SEE A SUPERGROUP LIKE THIS AGAIN.

Four solo stars.

Four massive egos.

Four outlaw images.

And somehow, it worked.

But here’s what made it unforgettable…

They did not come together because country music needed a polished boy band in cowboy hats. They came together because they were friends, rebels, and artists who understood each other’s scars.

The Untold Truth of the Highwaymen

And that’s not all…

Each man brought his own thunder.

Johnny had the black-clad mystery.
Willie had the wandering poet spirit.
Waylon had the outlaw edge.
Kris had the songwriter’s soul.

Together, they turned four verses into one brotherhood.

But here’s where the story gets heavier…

The same outlaw spirit that made them iconic also made them hard to hold together. There were legal troubles, health struggles, personal battles, and the weight of four men who had already lived several lifetimes before the group even began.

Here’s why The Highwaymen did not last forever…

Here’s the truth…

When The Highwaymen came together, they did not just make music.

They captured an entire attitude.

Freedom. Brotherhood. Trouble. Survival.

They helped define the outlaw country image that generations of country stars would chase after them.

Which Highwayman was your favorite? The song below captures the essence of the band perfectly.
