At the peak of his career, Neil had a depressive episode, lucky for us, because as a result, we got a hit that feels like a warm hug by an old friend!
He released the song in 1972 for his album, Moods.
The song has a secret, though! Neil actually “stole” the melody. He was inspired by a famous Mozart (an Austrian musician) piano piece. Neil took that old, fancy music and turned it into a pop song that everyone could hum!
The message is simple: “Song sung blue, everybody knows one.” Neil wanted to show that everyone gets sad, but if you sing about it, the sadness starts to go away. It’s like a magic trick for your brain! Even though the song is about being “blue,” it’s so bouncy and fun that you can’t help but smile when you hear it.

But the most amazing part of the story is happening right now.
In late 2025, Hollywood released a massive movie also called Song Sung Blue. It stars the legendary Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.
But wait, it’s not a movie about Neil Diamond! It’s a true story about a real-life couple, Mike and Claire. They were two regular people from Milwaukee who were going through some really hard times. To keep their spirits up, they started a Neil Diamond tribute band called “Lightning and Thunder.”
The movie shows them traveling around in sparkly outfits, singing “Song Sung Blue” to crowds at state fairs and bars. Even when they faced accidents and health scares, Neil’s music was the “glue” that kept them together.
From a Mozart piano to a 1970s radio hit, and now to a big-screen movie starring Wolverine himself, this song proves that as long as you keep singing, you’re never truly defeated! That’s the magic of Neil Diamond.
