The 19-Year-Old Who Tried to Out-Sing the World

Imagine being 19 years old and having a fight with your brother. Most people just stop talking for a day, but Robin Gibb wasn’t “most people.”

In 1969, after a huge argument with his brother Barry over which song should be a single, Robin did the unthinkable: he quit the Bee Gees.

He didn’t just walk away; he wanted to prove he was the biggest star on the planet.

So, what did he do?

He released his first solo song, “Saved by the Bell,” and it was a massive smash hit! It shot up to #2 on the charts, and suddenly, the 19-year-old Robin was a solo king.

But the story doesn’t end with him being alone! Robin eventually realized that the magic was strongest when he was with his brothers, so he went back to the Bee Gees. But here is the cool part: he never stopped being his own man.

Even while he was back in the band, Robin kept recording his own solo songs. He had so much music in him that one band couldn’t hold it all!

One of those songs was a quiet, spooky masterpiece called “I Started a Joke.” It showed off his famous “trembling” voice – a sound so unique that nobody else could copy it.

The song became one of the most loved hits in history. And the best part? The brothers weren’t jealous at all. Barry and Maurice loved Robin’s success because they knew his voice made the Bee Gees feel like magic.

Barry proved how proud he was of his brother when he passed away. In 2013, Barry Gibb went on his “Mythology” tour. He stood on the stage alone, but he didn’t want to sing “I Started a Joke” by himself. Suddenly, a giant screen behind him lit up with a video of Robin from the past.

It was a duet across time. Barry would sing a line, and then Robin’s voice would fill the stadium from the heavens.

Barry stood there, looking up at his brother’s face on the screen with tears in his eyes. It proved that even though the brothers fought when they were young, their love was stronger than anything. Robin might be gone, but through Barry, he is still singing to us today!
