Did you know that Robin Gibb lived in a house for ghosts? He didn’t live in a normal home with a TV and a couch. He lived in a giant, 800-year-old building called a monastery. It had thick stone walls, cold floors, and tiny windows. Most people would be scared to stay there at night, but Robin loved it!
Why is that? because Robin was a very different kind of man. He didn’t eat meat at all. He loved to drink hot herbal tea all day and all night. But his biggest secret was his obsession with the Titanic. He spent thousands of hours reading about the famous sinking ship. He collected old things from the ocean and even wrote a whole symphony about the boat!
He felt like he could “see” the past just by sitting in his quiet, dark rooms.
Because he loved history so much, Robin didn’t like the sun. He said he was a “midnight man.” While his brothers, Barry and Maurice, were sleeping, Robin would wake up. He would walk through the dark hallways of his castle in his pajamas. He didn’t carry a pen or a guitar. He just walked and listened.
Intriguing, right?

Robin said he didn’t “work” to write songs! He said the songs were already floating in the air like invisible birds. He just had to be quiet enough to catch them! He would hum into a small tape recorder in the middle of the night. Then, the next morning, he would show his brothers a masterpiece.
One of the most famous songs he “caught” this way was “I Gotta Get a Message to You.” It is a song about a man in big trouble, with very little time left. It is sad, fast, and very catchy. When he played it for Barry and Maurice, they knew it was a hit right away! It went straight to Number 1 on the charts.
People all over the world sang along to Robin’s “midnight” song. They didn’t know it was born in a cold, dark castle while a man drank tea and talked to ghosts!
