Keyla Richardson came home to Pensacola on May 6, and the city did not hold back. After making the Top 3 on American Idol, she walked into KeylaFest — a full day of celebrations that drew nearly 10,000 people to downtown and made clear just how much this city has invested in her run on the show
Pensacola welcomes Keyla Richardson
The parade kicked off at 4 p.m. along South Palafox Street, with fans lining the route in black and yellow, the colors of the KEYHIVE. The Tate High and Washington High School bands marched alongside a float specifically made for the occasion. When the procession ended at Plaza de Luna, Mayor D.C. Reeves presented Keyla with the key to the city. She smiled through tears as the crowd erupted around her.
“We get to have a celebration as a community together, rallying around something that we can all get behind, which is lifting up Keyla and her family.” — Mayor D.C. Reeves.
A New Orleans-style second line then led fans from the parade site to the Hunter Amphitheater, where the free concert began at 6:30 p.m.
The 5,000 standing-room tickets had sold out in under an hour when they were released.
Overflow seats at Blue Wahoos Stadium, with a videoboard view of the show, were also gone well before the night began.
Highlights from Keyla’s homecoming event
The whole event was filmed by the American Idol production crew and is set to air during the season finale on May 11, meaning millions of viewers will see Pensacola on national television.
For Pensacola, this has never just been about a TV show. Keyla grew up singing in church and has spent years teaching music in the community. The city knows her. And on May 6, they made sure she knew it too.
