In 1972, Neil Diamond did something that shouldn’t have been possible! He booked 10 sold-out nights at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles!
The air was thick, heavy, and hot, what people in California call “earthquake weather.” But, the people still didn’t hesitate to book their tickets to see Neil Diamond perform! Why? because the real heat would be coming from the stage!
Neil named the shows “Hot August Night.” (perfect for the hot weather!) The name actually came from the very first line of his song Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show. It was the perfect way to describe the sweaty, high-energy vibe of that summer!
The shows were so packed that if you didn’t have a ticket, you were out of luck. Or so people thought.
Hundreds of fans who couldn’t get in actually climbed the pine trees and the steep mountainside behind the theater just to hear him. In the middle of the show, Neil looked up into the dark woods and gave them a shout-out. He called them the “Tree People” and said he was singing for them, too. That one moment turned a concert into a movement!
Fun fact: Here is a weird mystery with the 1972 shows. Even though the Hot August Night album is one of the most famous live records ever, there is no official professional video of the full 1972 concert. Neil recorded the audio, but they didn’t bring film cameras for the whole thing. Here is the audio version for you to hear!

He played everything! “Sweet Caroline,” “Cherry, Cherry,” and “Cracklin’ Rosie.” But he wasn’t just singing. He was a man possessed. He proved that he wasn’t just a guy who wrote catchy songs for the radio; he was the greatest live performer on the planet.
Then came the part nobody expected. Right at the finish line of those 10 nights, at the absolute highest point of his fame, Neil Diamond walked off that stage and quit!
He didn’t just take a vacation. He took a four-year break. He was burned out from the road and wanted to just be a normal guy and a dad for a while. He left the music world in total shock. For four long years, the Greek Theatre sat empty and silent, and fans wondered if the King was ever coming back.
But, well, he did come back, and that comeback happened right at the place he said farewell to his fans. And, that’s a story for another time! Follow us for more content on Neil’s amazing life! Watch him talk about his four-year break right here!
