If you think a regular dinner party is fancy, imagine one at the White House with the President, the First Lady, and a literal Princess!
In November 1985, the world was obsessed with Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s visit to America. It was called “Royal Fever,” and the hottest ticket in town was a gala dinner hosted by Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
Among the movie stars and politicians stood Neil Diamond, looking as cool as ever. But even a superstar like Neil can get a little star struck!
The night was already full of magic, but Nancy Reagan had a special plan. She walked over to Neil and asked if he would sing for the Princess. Nancy took him to meet the orchestra leader, and guess what? They had already practiced a whole list of Neil’s songs just in case!
Princess Diana Danced With Neil Diamond At White House Dinner
Neil was thrilled. He stepped up to the microphone and sang “September Morn” as the royal couple and the famous guests listened. But the best part was yet to come.
After singing, Neil wanted to do something, but was hesitant. He wanted to ask the princess for a dance. But, guess what?! The princess asked him for a dance herself! So iconic!
As the military band played his hit song “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” the two of them waltzed across the floor.
Here is a fun fact: People who were there that night say Princess Diana was visibly blushing! Even though she was one of the most famous women in the world, dancing with the “Jewish Elvis” made her cheeks turn bright red.
Did you know that Neil Diamond performed personally for Princess Diana?
Later on, Neil talked about how “exhilarating” the whole thing was. He was just a regular guy from Brooklyn, and there he was, serenading and dancing with royalty. He said it was a “wonderful experience” and that he would never forget it.
Interestingly, while Diana danced with Neil, John Travolta, and even the President, she didn’t dance with Prince Charles at all that evening! Our American heroes were fun and enough for the most beloved princess!
