We looked deeply into the 22-year-old’s life back in Bel Air, Maryland. We wanted to know who he really was before the television cameras found him. What we discovered was not a kid chasing fame. We found a guy who stumbled into music entirely by accident.
Just a few years ago, his future was on a grass field. Brooks was a serious, dedicated soccer player. That was his entire plan for his life. Then, a severe injury happened. The doctor gave him the bad news, and his plan evaporated overnight. When you lose the one thing you are completely devoted to, life gets very quiet. Brooks had to figure out what to do with his empty hands.
He did not immediately run to a recording studio. He went somewhere much quieter.
He took a job working in a dementia care facility. His own grandmother was fighting the illness. He spent his days sitting in quiet rooms, helping people who were slowly losing their memories. It is heavy, patient work. Somewhere in the middle of that quiet grief, he found a guitar.

He did not learn to play the guitar to impress a giant crowd. He learned to play so he could give his grandmother something familiar to hold onto. He sang to her.
