We all know Sir Barry Gibb as the kind, humble legend with an angelic voice. But even a king has his limits! In 1997, Barry showed the world that he doesn’t just have a high voice, he has high standards for respect!
Hold your horses because this is the story of the most famous “mic drop” in talk show history!
The Bee Gees were guests on a show hosted by a man named Clive Anderson. From the very start of the show with the brothers, Clive was being a “hater.” He kept making fun of their lyrics and their disco past. Barry, Robin, and Maurice tried to be nice at first. At times, they even laughed it off, hoping that Clive would stop! But Clive wouldn’t stop.
The real trigger happened when they started talking about their hit songs. Clive Anderson said something that was a huge “no-no.” He called them “hit writers” but then joked that they were “one letter short” (implying their music was “sh*t”).
When Clive joked that he had “forgotten” one of their songs, Barry had enough. He looked at Clive and said sarcastically, “We’re getting on like a storm, aren’t we?” Then, Barry stood up and dropped the line that everyone still quotes today: “In fact, I might just leave… and you’re the tosser, pal!”
Barry didn’t look back once! He looked so cool and powerful doing it!
Robin and Maurice were shocked for a second, but they didn’t let their brother walk alone. They stood up and followed him out, leaving the host sitting there looking very silly and confused.
Til date, fans in the comments always say, “Don’t poke the lion!” Barry proved that you can be humble and nice, but you should never let people treat you like a joke.
Even though it was a tense moment, Barry looked incredibly handsome and sharp in his suit, putting on a power move on live television!
He showed the world that they had worked hard for their success and deserved respect!
