The Story Behind Your Favourite Bee Gees Song

Imagine writing one of the most famous love songs in human history, only for a guy from Chicago to claim you stole it while he was mowing his lawn. That is exactly what happened to Barry Gibb and his brothers in 1983.

The song? “How Deep Is Your Love.” The stakes? A staggering $50 million and the reputation of the world’s most successful songwriting trio!

The drama started when an amateur songwriter named Ronald Selle was working in his yard. Suddenly, he heard his neighbor blasting a cassette tape. His heart stopped. He didn’t hear a Bee Gees hit; he heard his own song, “Let It End,” which he had copyrighted three years earlier.

Selle sued, and the case was wild. He hired a classical music expert who testified that out of the first 34 notes of Selle’s song, 24 were identical to the Bee Gees’ hit. It looked like an open-and-shut case of plagiarism. In a shock move, the jury actually voted against the Bee Gees. For a few days in 1983, the world thought the Disco Kings were frauds.

The Song That Got Barry Gibb Sued for $50 Million

Barry Gibb didn’t take this lying down. The Bee Gees brought their work tapes into the courtroom. These weren’t just finished songs; they were raw recordings of the brothers in the studio, humming, arguing, and “inventing” the melody from scratch.

Luckily, the brothers always recorded their session in case they forgot the on-the-spot melody they came up with! Life saver, right?!

The judge watched as Barry literally built the song note by note on tape. It was proof of independent creation. The judge eventually overturned the jury’s verdict, ruling that there was no way the Bee Gees, who were in France at the time, could have ever heard a tiny demo from a guy in Chicago.

Despite the legal nightmare, the song became immortal. It didn’t just survive the lawsuit; it conquered the world:

  • #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks.
  • It stayed in the Top 10 for 17 weeks, a record at the time.
  • It won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance.

In 2026, we see artists like Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa facing similar “vibe” lawsuits. But Barry Gibb was the first to prove that sometimes, two people just happen to find the same beautiful melody in the air.
