Imagine it is 1981. If you turned on the TV, you saw two people who looked like they stepped out of a fairytale! One was Andy Gibb, the youngest Bee Gees brother with the golden voice. The other was Victoria Principal, the superstar actress from the hit show Dallas. Together, they were the ultimate “power couple.”
Their love story started like a movie. They met on The John Davidson Show in January 1981. Andy was already a fan of Victoria. He even told a magazine she was his favorite actress!
When she surprised him on stage, Andy was so starstruck he actually slid off the couch and sat on the floor!
This turned to the start of their love story. Later, as a couple, they appeared on the Phil Donahue Show, and because they were so in love, they decided to record a song together. They chose a cover of “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers. It was a perfect choice because they really were living a dream! (and they knew it would break the internet – it did)
They weren’t just singing; they were looking into each other’s eyes like nobody else existed.
Andy Gibb, Victoria Principal – All I Have To Do Is Dream
Fun Fact: Victoria wasn’t actually a professional singer! Andy was the one who encouraged her. He booked the studio time and then told her, “We’re doing a duet!” He believed in her voice so much that he coached her through the whole thing.
After the performance, the couple sat down to talk about their life together. They were very open and sweet. Andy said he felt “much older than 23” because he became famous at such a young age. Victoria shared how they both grew up moving around a lot because of their families! Andy moved between Australia and England, while Victoria was an “Air Force brat” born in Japan.
They even joked about the rumors that they were getting married. While they were living together and very happy, they told Phil they wanted to keep their commitment personal.
Fans loved them because they weren’t just celebrities; they were two humans who found home in each other.
Even though their relationship didn’t last forever, this performance remains a time capsule of pure 80s love. It reminds us that sometimes, all you have to do is dream!
