Everyone knows the Bee Gees – Barry Gibb, his twin brothers Maurice, and Robin Gibb. But did you know there was a fourth brother?!
A “Golden Boy” named Andy Gibb. He was 12 years younger than his brother.
The boy was born rich. So, you’d think his life would be easy and happy? Well, that wasn’t the case.
Andy was lonely and bullied throughout his childhood. Students at his school were jealous of him because he was the brother of the world’s most famous pop group. They hated having to walk to school, whereas Andy was dropped off in a Rolls-Royce.
The Tragic Life Of Andy Gibb
But Andy didn’t let this define him. He chose not to live in the shadow! Barry Gibb handed Andy a guitar and gave him a mission: “Go be a star on your own.” And you know what? He became a bigger star than the Bee Gees.
At just 19, Andy became a chart monster.
One afternoon, Barry sat down and wrote two massive songs for Andy. “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” and “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water,” in just 40 minutes. The result? Andy made history! He was the first male solo artist ever to have his first three songs go straight to #1.
He had the looks, the voice, and the fame. He was the “Fourth Bee Gee” the world was waiting for.
Finally, in 1988, the dream was coming true. The Bee Gees officially announced that Andy is joining the band! The trio was finally becoming a quartet. The world was ready for the greatest comeback in music history!
Why Andy Gibb was NEVER a Bee Gees?
But the universe had other plans. Just days after the announcement, before he could ever take his place on stage as a permanent Bee Gee, Andy died. He was only 30 years old.
He went from a bullied kid to the King of the Charts, but he died right before he could join the family business.
Andy remains the greatest “What If?” in pop music. He topped charts way quicker than his brothers could. He was in the limelight for a short time, yet ensured history would remember him.
