In 2006, Michael Jackson arrived in Ireland with his three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, searching for privacy after one of the most turbulent periods of his life. Yet according to biographer Randall Sullivan, Jackson was looking for something else too. He reportedly told his children to keep their eyes open for leprechauns because he genuinely believed the legendary little figures could be real.
Sullivan wrote that Jackson told the children there was no better place to chase magic than Ireland during the summer. His fascination was apparently serious rather than a joke for the children. Reports from the period also described his interest in Irish fairies, folklore and myths, fitting a side of Jackson that had long been drawn to fantasy.

Once Jackson reached Ireland, the story became even stranger. Newspapers reported that he wanted to spend hundreds of millions of euros building a leprechaun-themed amusement park in County Cork. That claim spread internationally, but Jackson’s representative publicly dismissed the theme park story as false and Sullivan later described that particular report as bogus.
What was real was Jackson’s growing attachment to Ireland. He spent months there with his children, eventually settling around Grouse Lodge Studios in County Westmeath where he could work on music away from the usual crowds. People who encountered the family recalled visits to cinemas, bowling alleys and children’s activity centers where locals often allowed them unusual privacy.
Michael Jackson’s Secret Retreat in Ireland
The leprechaun belief sounds extraordinary, but it fits a theme that followed Jackson for decades. He named his California estate Neverland after the magical world of Peter Pan and filled the property with amusement rides, trains and other fantasy-inspired attractions. Ireland offered something similar without the spectacle: castles, woods, folklore and enough privacy for Jackson to disappear into that world with his children.
Michael Jackson ultimately left behind far more than unusual stories about magic. He became one of pop music’s defining performers, transformed music videos into major events and created records such as Thriller that became part of global culture. Still, his Irish escape reveals one of the more unexpected sides of the superstar. Watch the videos and decide for yourself: was his belief in leprechauns charming, strange or completely Michael Jackson?
