Michael Jackson was already known worldwide as the King of Pop when another royal title found him in a small West African village. In February 1992, traditional leaders in Krindjabo, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire’s Sanwi kingdom, welcomed him beneath a sacred tree and gave him a name that would take on a haunting meaning far from Hollywood many years after his death.
The ceremony included traditional drumming, ritual dancing, royal clothing and a golden throne. Jackson was formally recognized as Prince Amalaman Anoh, a title linked to the kingdom’s first ruler. Although many later stories called him a king, stronger accounts describe the honor as a princely title within the Sanwi royal tradition.

The surviving footage captures the public celebration, but the deeper meaning came from how seriously the kingdom treated the bond. For local leaders, this was not simply a celebrity visit arranged for cameras. Jackson had been welcomed as family, given a place in their royal story and remembered by the community long after he left.
After Jackson died in June 2009, Sanwi leaders asked for his remains to be returned to Krindjabo for a traditional burial. The request failed, but the kingdom still held a two-day royal funeral for its lost prince. What followed turned private grief into a lasting public memorial.

The funeral ended with an even stranger tribute. A symbolic royal tomb was declared sacred and its location kept secret. Years later, Krindjabo began creating a public Michael Jackson memorial, giving fans a visible place of remembrance while the prince’s hidden tomb remained protected within the kingdom’s private traditions.
Michael Jackson transformed music videos, won 13 Grammys and changed pop performance, yet Krindjabo preserved a more personal legacy. There he remained Prince Amalaman Anoh, the son they tried to bring home. Watch both videos to see why this distant kingdom still refuses to let its lost prince disappear.
