For weeks, American Idol fans were split between two very different stars: Hannah Harper and Keyla Richardson. But after the Season 24 finale crowned Hannah the winner, the internet erupted into one of the most heated debates the show has seen in years.
Hannah Harpe is a wife and mother of three hailing from Missouri, and she just became the first female country singer since Carrie Underwood to win American Idol in Season 4.
Her viral original “String Cheese” created a massive fan movement online, and her open Christian faith connected with a wide swath of viewers throughout the season
BUT CRITICS ARGUED THAT THE COMPETITION GRADUALLY MOVED AWAY FROM PURE VOCALS TOWARDS OPULARITY
Keyla’s supporters insisted she consistently delivered the strongest live performances of the season. Her final performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Love the Lord” drew enormous praise.
Keyla delivers a magnificent finale performance
Richardson performed Alicia Keys’ “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” before singing Whitney Houston’s “I Love the Lord” for the hometown segment, with judge Luke Bryan telling her:
“This whole year I just watched you focus with drive and steadfastness… We’ve seen you just give it your all for your family and your crew and your people and you’ve won in our eyes.”
That debate became louder when Keyla was cut before the final showdown even began. Some fans investigated further, questioning whether race played a role in the voting outcome and pointing to the varying levels of online visibility each contestant received.
Could it be the fact that the last American Idol was a black American? So this time, they couldn’t let that happen.
Others have pushed back, arguing that Hannah simply built a deeper emotional connection with viewers over the course of the season.
MEANWHILE, KEYLA HERSELF TOOK THE HIGH ROAD
The day after the finale, she posted on Instagram alongside Season 23 third-place finisher Breanna Nix: “Season 23 & Season 24 3rd place finalist! It’s NOT BAD AT ALL, it’s actually GREAT. I’m excited about what’s coming. It’s only up from here!”
Pensacola reacts to Keyla’s placement
One thing viewers noticed after the announcement: very little camera time on Keyla once the results were read. Richardson skipped the post-show press entirely — a decision that drove no shortage of online speculation. But her social media messages in the days that came after were nothing but gratitude.
As for Hannah, she thought about her win with an Instagram post of her own:
“What a wild, beautiful journey this has been. And somehow we’re just getting started. Thank you to every single person who believed in me, prayed over me, voted, and helped carry this dream farther than I ever could’ve imagined. Y’all changed my life.”
The Hannah-versus-Keyla debate, though, refuses to die down. And if social media is any judge, fans may never fully agree on who truly deserved the crown.
