From Her Couch to the American Idol Stage, Hannah Harper’s Story of Winning

American Idol has a new winner,  and her name is Hannah Harper.

The 25-year-old mom of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, walked onto that stage as a stay-at-home mom with a dream, and walked off as the Season 24 American Idol champion.

Her story started with a song born from a really hard day. After the birth of her youngest son, Hannah fell into postpartum depression.

She was sitting on her couch, not wanting to be touched, just asking God to calm her spirit,  when her little boy kept tugging at her, asking her to open his cheese.

That tiny moment cracked something open in her. She got up, wrote a song about it, and called it “String Cheese.”

Hannah’s journey began here

That song is what brought her to Hollywood. When Hannah performed it during her audition, judge Carrie Underwood told her, “You might be my favorite person that’s walked through those doors.” From that moment, America was watching.

Week after week, Hannah showed up and gave people something real. Her performances ranged from Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing” to Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” to Taylor Swift’s “Mean”.

Each one carrying the same honesty that made fans fall in love with her in the first place.

Her videos consistently pulled more YouTube views than her competitors all season long.

The finale came down to Hannah, Jordan McCullough, and Keyla Richardson.

It was a big night. Alicia Keys performed, the judges took the stage, and guest artists filled the evening with memorable moments. Hannah even dueted with Lee Ann Womack on “I Hope You Dance.” Then, to close out her time on the show, she performed “String Cheese”, this time with a full band behind her, the same song that started it all.
