When we think of the King of Rock and Roll, we normally picture screaming fans, loud guitars, and flashy jumpsuits. But behind the heavy curtain of fame, Elvis Presley had a beautiful secret escape. In February 1967, the music legend found his ultimate freedom away from the stage: a golden palomino American Quarter Horse named Rising Sun. This majestic animal became the King’s absolute favorite companion, stepping out of the shadows and into rock history.
The connection between the rock star and his horse was pure magic. Rising Sun was not just a regular pet he was Elvis’s trusted personal mount. Whenever the pressure of the music world became too heavy, Elvis would saddle up his golden friend. Sadly, even the most beautiful songs must eventually fade. In 1986, nine years after the world lost Elvis, Graceland suffered another massive heartbreak. Rising Sun took his very last breath. To honor this legendary horse, Graceland buried him in the exact pasture he loved so much. In a deeply moving, poetic final act, they laid Rising Sun to rest facing east. This way, the King’s favorite horse would forever be the first to greet the morning dawn.

While Rising Sun ruled the barn, the rest of Graceland was actually a wildly busy zoo! Beyond the golden horse, Elvis had a massive, unpredictable collection of pets that would shock most fans. We are talking about donkeys living in a drained swimming pool and noisy peacocks roaming the yard! Those peacocks even had to be given away because they kept pecking at their own reflections in Elvis’s shiny luxury cars.
The wildest story of all belongs to a naughty chimpanzee named Scatter. Elvis dressed this monkey in little suits and let him ride in the front seat of his fancy Rolls-Royce car. Scatter had a crazy personality, loved to tear up rooms, and was totally fearless. Meanwhile, inside the mansion, Lisa Marie once brought her own little pony, Mariah, right into the house to show her grandmother! It was a funny, chaotic scene that left a huge mess between the kitchen and the famous jungle room.
