The Secret Story of the Song “Grease”

Robert Stigwood directed Grease in 1978.  The movie is all about high schools, fast cars, and leather jackets in the 1950s. But then, imagine this happens! Suddenly, a songwriter hands you a song that sounds like a loud disco party from the 1970s. You would probably say, “No way! This doesn’t fit my movie at all!”

That is exactly what happened to Barry Gibb and the most famous song from the movie Grease.

Barry Gibb was the leader of the Bee Gees, the kings of disco music. One afternoon, while he was babysitting at home, he got a phone call from a big movie boss named Robert Stigwood. Robert said, “Barry, we have all the songs for the movie Grease, but we don’t have a main song that explains what ‘Grease’ actually is. Can you write one?” Barry didn’t even know where to start! He asked, “How do you write a song about hair grease?” But he sat down, and in just a few hours, he wrote the famous words: “Grease is the word!”

When Barry showed the song to the movie’s director, Randal Kleiser, things got tense. Randal hated the song! He thought the lyrics were too dark and the music was “too disco” for a movie set in the 1950s.

He even had another song ready to take its place. But Barry Gibb didn’t back down. He knew the song was a masterpiece! He told the movie team that they had to take it exactly as it was, or they couldn’t use it at all. It was a huge risk, but Barry won the fight.

Because Barry stood his ground, they kept the song and asked the legendary singer Frankie Valli to perform it. Hear his sung version right here!

When the movie came out, “Grease” became a massive hit all over the world! It sold seven million copies and stayed at number one on the charts for weeks. Today, you can’t think of the movie without hearing that cool, funky beat.

It is a perfect reminder that sometimes, the “experts” are wrong, and you should always trust your own creative heart. If Barry had listened to the director, we would have lost one of the greatest songs in history!

The Bee Gees later sang their own version of the song! Hear them perform it live right here!
