Barry Gibb’s Song That Waited 60 Years To Be Released

Think about writing a beautiful poem when you were just a teenager, hiding it in a wooden chest, and then forgetting about it for sixty years. That is exactly what happened to the world-famous singer Barry Gibb!

Even if you don’t know his name, you have definitely heard his voice. He was the leader of the Bee Gees, the band that made the whole world want to dance to “Stayin’ Alive.” But long before the flashy suits and disco lights, Barry wrote a secret song called “Butterfly.”

Back in 1966, Barry and his brothers were just starting their journey to becoming superstars. They wrote “Butterfly” for their very first big international album, called Bee Gees’ 1st. It was a sweet, quiet song, but at the last minute, they decided to leave it off the record!

Instead of singing it themselves, they gave the song to other artists to record. The Bee Gees’ own version stayed hidden away like a ghost. For decades, the song sat on a dusty piece of tape while Barry traveled the globe and won many awards. A rough version appeared on a small album in 1970, but it wasn’t the big hit Barry knew it could be. He never forgot that little “Butterfly.”

Finally, Barry decided it was time to let the song fly. He traveled to Nashville, the home of country music, to record a special new album. He loved this “lost” song so much that he even named his new album after the very first line of the lyrics: Greenfields.

He didn’t want loud drums or flashy computer sounds this time. He wanted something real. He invited two famous folk singers, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, to help him rework the song. They replaced the old sounds with beautiful acoustic guitars and soft, sweet harmonies.

The result is pure magic. Even though the song was written sixty years ago, it sounds like it was born yesterday. Barry is now 79, and hearing him sing a song he wrote as a teenager is like watching a time traveler in action. It is a reminder to all of us: never throw away your dreams, even if they stay in a box for a lifetime. If you haven’t heard it yet, hear the song right here!
