An Inspiration Talk With The Bee Gees

Have you ever seen three brothers try to climb a mountain made of music? In a famous 1997 NBC interview, the Bee Gees, Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, sat down to talk about their lives. They wanted the world to know that being a superstar is not just about fame. It is about never letting go of your dream.

The interview began with a big question: How do you stay famous for so long? Most people think that once you win a Grammy, you are at the finish line. But Barry Gibb said no. He explained that music is like a giant mountain. Even after selling millions of records, he felt like they were still at “Base Camp 10.”

“Everyone else thinks you are at the peak,” Barry said. “But you don’t feel it. You still want to go somewhere.” He joked that if you looked at the very top of the mountain, you would see three sets of eyes and six sets of fingernails hanging on for dear life! He said this was the life of three brothers! They stayed famous because they never stopped trying to climb higher.

Next, the brothers talked about how they wrote their beautiful songs. They had a secret trick: The tape recorder was always spinning. Maurice was the master of the piano. Sometimes he would play a sweet tune, then forget it the very next second! Barry and Robin would shout, “What was that? What did you just play?” Because the tape was always running, they could go back and find that “priceless” magic. This is how they wrote hits for themselves and for friends like Barbra Streisand, who Barry called a “total pro.”

The brothers also shared the hard times. After the movie Saturday Night Fever, the world changed. Suddenly, people thought their long hair and white suits were “uncool.” People started to say mean things about their music.

Barry shared a very smart rule for life to explain how they survived: “You have to take the cracks on the head with the slaps on the back.” This means that when people are mean (a crack on the head), you don’t give up. You wait for the good times (the slaps on the back) to return. They kept their eyes on the music, not the fashion.

Before the talk ended, they spoke about their friend Michael Jackson. They had a secret plan to write an album together. They even joked about going on a world tour with Michael’s giant 30-foot statues! While only Barry got to finish a song with Michael later on, the brothers loved the idea of working together as one big musical family.

The interview is a total inspiration! But the funniest part is that Barry talks about his whole life and music while playing with the bottle! Watch it right here.
