Imagine being so good at your job that people give you a trophy, but so bad at your new hobby that they give you a “stink-bomb” award. That is exactly what happened to the legendary singer Neil Diamond in 1980!
Neil Diamond is a superstar with a voice like velvet, but when he tried acting in the movie The Jazz Singer, things got weird.
That year, a group of friends started a “parody” award show called the Razzies. They wanted to poke fun at the worst movies in Hollywood. Neil Diamond had the honor of winning the very first Razzie for Worst Actor.

At the exact same time, the Golden Globes (a very serious award show) looked at the same movie and nominated him for Best Actor! How can someone be the “worst” and the “best” in the same week? It was a total Hollywood paradox.
Fun Fact: To get Neil to look “angry” for a sad scene in the movie, his crew reportedly played Barry Manilow (Neil disliked his voice) songs on set because they knew it would annoy him!
Even though critics thought his acting was a bit “stiff,” they couldn’t deny his music. While the Razzies were laughing, the Grammys were cheering!
The movie’s songs were massive hits. Have you ever heard the songs “America” or “Love on the Rocks”? Those came from this movie! Neil was nominated for a Grammy for the soundtrack, and the album sold millions of copies.
Neil Diamond showed the world that even if you fail at one thing, your true talent will always shine through. He might have a “Worst Actor” trophy on his shelf, but he has a “Greatest Legend” spot in our hearts.
