The Night Neil Diamond’s “America” Found Its Glory

Imagine a night where the sky was full of fire! Why? Because the Statue of Liberty was having her 100th birthday party in 1986.

It was a four-day celebration taking place at  Governors Island in New York Harbor.

The air was filled with the smell of salt, right beside the sea, and the sound of thousands of people cheering. During the performances, high up in the stands, even the Presidents of America (Ronald Reagan) and France(François Mitterrand) were watching.

But, among all those big names, one man stood out! It was Neil Diamond!

Neil wore a shirt, covered in thousands of tiny, sparkly stones. It became one of his most famous looks til date. And an interesting fact you might not have known about his shirt: it was custom-made just for this big night!

It wasn’t just his shirt that was flashy; by the way, his whole performance was iconic.

When Neil started singing his famous song, “America,” the fans present report that the whole island seemed to shake. The most fun part was that whenever he sang about the flag, a massive American flag – bigger than a house – dropped down from the roof right behind him!

That night was so special that right after the show, Neil broke a world record! He sold every single ticket for eight giant concerts in a row at Madison Square Garden because everyone wanted to see the man who sang to the Statue.

But why was Neil singing with so much fire in his heart?

You see, “America” wasn’t just a song he wrote for a movie called The Jazz Singer back in 1980. It was a thank-you gift for his grandmother. Long ago, his grandmother was a very brave woman in Russia. She had to walk and travel over 1,000 miles, which is like walking through many forests and cities, just to get on a boat to find a safe home. Neil once said that her courage lives inside every song he sings.

Inside the song, Neil hid a secret message for his family. He sings the words, “Without a home, but not without a star.” That “star” is a special symbol called the Star of David, which represents his Jewish family, hence his nickname “Jewish Elvis.”

He wanted the world to know that even if you have no house, you still have your dreams and your heart to guide you. When people heard this, they loved him even more.

Neil is still loved by many and is considered a living legend in the music industry! Follow him to learn more interesting stories about him.
