The biggest war crime happened in 1969 because of two songs and one massive ego. The brothers were fighting over which song should be the “A-side” (the main hit) of their next record.
Robin Gibb had a beautiful, haunting song called Lamplight. He sang the lead and loved it! But his older brother Barry pushed for his own song, First of May. When their manager picked Barry’s song and pushed Robin’s to the “B-side” (the back of the record), Robin was furious! He felt like a backup singer. So, Robin did the unthinkable: he officially quit the Bee Gees!

Robin didn’t just quit; he wanted to prove he could win on his own. In June 1969, at only 19, he released his solo anthem, “Saved by the Bell.”
The Result: It was a huge smash hit! It shot to Number 2 on the charts, proving to his brothers that he was a star in his own right!
While Robin was celebrating, Barry and Maurice tried to keep the Bee Gees going without him, but the magic was gone. Fans missed Robin’s shaky, emotional voice.

Even though Robin won the chart battle, he was miserable. He later admitted, “I felt like I lost a limb when I left.” He was so stressed that he even had a nervous breakdown. After over a year of fighting and silence, their father finally sat them down. In August 1970, the brothers officially reunited. They realized they were stronger together, and they went on to change music forever with Saturday Night Fever!
